What is the Shanti Stupa?
A modern white stupa on a ridge north-west of Leh. Wikivoyage says a Japanese Buddhist group built it. It stands about 7 minutes from the town centre on our routing, and a stairway climbs to it. We have no verified history, opening hours or entry rules, so ask locally before you go.
Can you walk up or drive?
Both are possible by Wikivoyage's account: a stairway climbs to the stupa, and a road reaches it. Our routing measures about 3 km and 7 minutes by road from the town centre. Take the steps slowly, since the stupa stands at high altitude, and carry water and a layer for the wind.
What is the view like?
The ridge looks over Leh and the Indus valley, and Leh Palace and the Namgyal Tsemo hill can be seen from the terrace. Choose a clear morning or evening for the best light. We have no verified sunrise or sunset timings, so check the day's times yourself.
