Sorted by distance from the Ridge, because that's how a day here actually gets planned: what's a short walk, what needs a longer drive further out. The minutes are our own road routing; the prices are typical local bands with the date checked, never a booking — pay on the ground. The colonial-era core
1. The Ridge
The open square at the heart of town, connecting the Mall to Lakkar Bazaar. Free to visit, and the natural starting point of any day in Shimla. The Ridge.
2. Christ Church
On the Ridge itself, North India's second oldest surviving church, consecrated in 1857. Free entry, donations welcome. Christ Church.
3. Indian Institute of Advanced Study
The former Viceregal Lodge, about 9 minutes out — site of the 1945 Simla Conference and the 1947 partition decision. Entrance hall and gardens are free; the interior needs a guided tour. Indian Institute of Advanced Study.
4. Jakhoo Temple
About 16 minutes from the Ridge, on the town's highest point: the world's largest Hanuman statue, 108 feet tall. Free, with a taxi or the Jakhu Ropeway as alternatives to the steep walk up. Jakhoo Temple.
A quieter second day, still close to town
5. Sankat Mochan Temple
About 16 minutes out on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway: Shimla's second most visited Hanuman shrine, founded in 1950. Sankat Mochan Temple.
6. Chadwick Falls
About 14 minutes from the Ridge, near Summer Hill: a waterfall at its best just after the monsoon, and often dry the rest of the year. No dedicated page yet — ask locally for directions.
7. Army Heritage Museum
About 8 minutes out, in the Annadale cantonment: four sections spanning roughly 5,000 years of Indian military history. Army Heritage Museum.
Further out — the proper day trips
8. Kufri
About 29 minutes from the Ridge: a resort hill station with a Himalayan wildlife zoo and, in winter, a ski track through the potato plantations. Kufri.
9. Tara Devi Temple
About 39 minutes out, on its own hilltop: a roughly 250-year-old shrine built by Sen dynasty kings. Tara Devi Temple.
What it adds up to
The Ridge, Christ Church, the Institute and Jakhoo: one full day in the town core. Sankat Mochan, Chadwick Falls and the Army Heritage Museum: a second, quieter day, still close by. What can you do in Shimla for free?
The Ridge, Christ Church and the temples all charge no entry fee, donations only. What costs money is the Kalka-Shimla Railway itself, taxis between the further stops, and any guided tour covering the former Viceregal Lodge's own interior.
How many days do you need in Shimla?
One day covers the Ridge, Christ Church, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and Jakhoo Temple, all close to town. A second day reaches Kufri and Tara Devi Temple. A third adds Sankat Mochan Temple, Chadwick Falls and the Army Heritage Museum.
Is there anything to do in Shimla outside the main season?
Shimla itself stays open year-round, and its own IMD record shows real snow in January and February — a different kind of visit, not a closed one. Kufri's ski season, in fact, only runs during these colder winter months.
