What it is

The Gaiety Theatre, now run as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, is a Victorian theatre on the Mall in Shimla, also spelled Gaiety Theater. The English architect Henry Irwin designed it in the Gothic Revival style, it opened on 30 May 1887, and it was once one part of a much larger town hall complex.

Getting there

It stands on the Mall, which is closed to traffic, so you arrive on foot. It is a short walk from the Ridge and Christ Church, which is why it fits between them on a walking day.

The visit

From the square the building reads as a stone front under grey gabled roofs, with the mountain behind it. The reason to go in is the auditorium: a horseshoe of tiered seating and a curved balcony under a painted ceiling in blue and gold, with green walls below it. It was the stage of the colonial summer capital, and its acoustics are still praised.

When it opened it was a five-storey building that held the theatre, a ballroom, an armoury, a police office, a bar and galleries. About two decades later the larger structure was judged unsafe and was partly pulled down, but the theatre hall was left as it was. Those who have performed here since include Prithviraj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher, and Rudyard Kipling is recorded as having acted on its stage.

Today the complex has the old theatre hall, an art gallery attached to the Lalit Kala Akademi, an exhibition hall, a multi-purpose hall and an open-air amphitheatre, and local drama societies still use it. Film and music-video crews often shoot here too.

When to go

Any month, since it is a town-centre stop. The Mall is at its busiest in the April to June season, so a morning or an evening is easier. See when to visit Shimla.

Around it

The Ridge and Christ Church are a few minutes' walk along the Mall, and the Kalka–Shimla Railway is part of the same colonial story. The one-day plan strings them together, and things to do in Shimla has the rest.

Questions people ask

What is the Gaiety Theatre in Shimla?

A Victorian theatre on the Mall, now run as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex. The English architect Henry Irwin designed it in the Gothic Revival style and it opened on 30 May 1887. Today it holds the old theatre hall, an art gallery, an exhibition hall and an open-air stage.

Can you go inside the Gaiety Theatre?

It is a working venue as well as a heritage building, so access depends on what is on. We have no verified opening hours or ticket prices, so ask at the entrance on the Mall, and check whether a rehearsal, show or private function is closing the hall that day.

How long does the Gaiety Theatre take to see?

About an hour for the building and any gallery that is open, longer if you catch a performance. It stands on the traffic-free Mall a short walk from the Ridge and Christ Church, so it slots between them on a walking day rather than needing a trip of its own.
