Things to do in Ranikhet — temples, orchards, a regiment museum and Dwarahat
Ranikhet is a town of views and quiet roads, and its pleasures are small. A note first: Wikipedia and Wikivoyage list several places for which we could find no verified location or opening hours, so we describe them here but do not plan around them.
The temples
The Jhula Devi Temple, 10 minutes out, is a Durga shrine hung with bells. The Haidakhan Babaji Temple, 11 minutes the other way, is a Shiva temple at Chilianaula. The Mankameshwar Temple, which Wikipedia says the Kumaon Regiment built, stands in the middle of the cantonment.
The regiment and the cantonment
The Kumaon Regiment's museum, the KRC Museum, shows objects from the regiment's service. Wikipedia also lists Ashiyana Park, built for children, and Rani Jheel, a man-made lake with boat rides, and names St Bridget's Church among the older buildings of the cantonment. We have no verified hours for any of them.
Fruit and views
Chaubatia, about 10 km out, is known for orchards of apples, peaches, plums and apricots and for a government fruit research centre. Wikivoyage notes the Bhalu Dam, a small reservoir near the gardens. On the Almora road, the army's 9-hole golf course at Upat Kalika is counted by Wikipedia among the highest in Asia.
Villages
Tarikhet, 18 minutes away, is known for its Gandhi Kuti and a temple of Golu Devata. Majkhali, 22 minutes away, is a picnic village on the Almora road with a close view of the snow peaks.
A day out
The ancient stone temples of Dwarahat are about 74 minutes north, and the Dwarahat day joins them with Majkhali.
