Planning to go?Add your dates — we’ll count down, and tell you when stays or batches open for them.

A slow day around Ranikhet. It starts at the town's view point, visits the Haidakhan Babaji Temple and the Jhula Devi Temple, and ends at the village of Tarikhet. For a longer day out to the ancient temples, see the Dwarahat day.

Who this is for

Visitors on a short stay, families and anyone who wants pine ridges and quiet temples rather than a list of sights, from March to October.

Questions people ask

What can you do in Ranikhet in one day?

Walk to the view point for the Himalayan peaks, visit the Haidakhan Babaji and Jhula Devi temples, and end at Tarikhet village. They are 10, 11 and 18 minutes from the centre by road on our routing, so the day is relaxed. Add the Kumaon Regiment's museum if it is open, though we have no verified hours.

Is Ranikhet worth a day trip from Nainital or Almora?

It can be done, but the roads are slow: Nainital is about 120 minutes and Almora about 93 minutes from Ranikhet on our routing. Most visitors stay at least a night, so the morning light on the peaks and a slow day at the temples are not rushed.

When is this plan at its best?

March to October, by Wikipedia's account, with mornings clearest for the peaks. Winters are very cold, with snow mainly from December to February, though Wikivoyage says the Nanda Devi range is visible in clear weather from November to April. Ask locally about the road if snow is forecast.
