Things to do in Gangtok — monasteries, the royal chapel, Rumtek and the high road
Gangtok is a town of monasteries and long views, and most of what you want lies within half an hour of the centre.
In the town
The Enchey Monastery sits on a ridge north-east of the market, and the Tsuklakhang is the royal chapel of Sikkim's former kings, in the old palace area. The white Do-drul Chorten has 108 prayer wheels, and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology below it is the town's Tibet museum. Hanuman Tok, kept by the army, looks towards the Kanchenjunga range on a clear day. In the evening, Mahatma Gandhi Marg is the town's main promenade and market street.
A little further out
Rumtek Monastery, the seat of the Karmapa in exile, is about 51 minutes away on our routing, and the Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park is about 23 minutes north, on the road to North Sikkim.
The North Sikkim road
Kabi Lungchok, Phodong and Labrang are old monastery and treaty sites on the highway north, about 43 to 103 minutes out on our routing.
The high road, with a permit
Tsomgo Lake at 3,753 m and Nathu La are in a restricted border area, so you need a permit, arranged in Gangtok. Wikipedia says only Indian citizens can visit the pass. Confirm the current rule with Sikkim Tourism or your hotel.
Food
Wikipedia names momos, steamed dumplings, as the town's popular food, with thukpa, a noodle soup, other noodle dishes, shah-phaley patties and churpee, a chewy cheese from cow or yak milk. We have no verified restaurant list or prices; ask your hotel where locals eat.
