Things to do in Barot — 4 things, and what each needs
How this list is built
Barot is small, so the list is things to do in and around the village rather than a ranking of sights. Each entry that has its own page links to it, and the one-day plan strings the easy ones together.
In the village
1. The barrage and reservoir
A diversion dam on the Uhl, commissioned in 1932, with the reservoir above it. Uhl river and barrage.
2. Trout and the river
The Uhl supports trout breeding, there are fish farms in the village, and a 30 km section of the river is used for angling. We have no verified licence rules, so ask locally.
Across the river
3. Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary
Notified in 1999 and covering about 132 km², with goral, Himalayan black bear and pheasants, on the east side of the Uhl.
On foot
4. Treks from the valley
Trails run from Barot to Bada Bhangal, Dehnasar Lake, Manali and Kullu. For the lake, see the Dehnasar Lake trek notes.
Putting it together
The one-day plan covers the village. For arrival see how to reach Barot, and for timing when to visit Barot.
Questions people ask
What are the best things to do in Barot?
Walk the reservoir and the Uhl barrage commissioned in 1932, look at the trout-breeding centre and fish farms, and stay for the quiet. The Nargu Wildlife Sanctuary lies across the river, and several treks start from the valley, including the one to Dehnasar Lake, a sacred high lake.
What can you do in Barot for free?
Walk the river and the reservoir, which have no entry fee that we know of. The costs are the long road to Barot and anywhere you stay. We have no verified fishing licence or sanctuary rules, so ask in the village before you fish or enter the forest across the river.
How many days do you need in Barot?
One day covers the barrage, the river and the village. Many visitors stay a night or two as a base for treks. Dehnasar Lake needs at least two days on foot, with a halt midway, and is for prepared walkers or guided groups.
