How to reach Tawang — from Guwahati and Tezpur by road, over Sela Pass or through the tunnel

How to reach Tawang: about 555 km from Guwahati and 320 km from Tezpur by Wikipedia, the road through Bomdila, Dirang and Sela Pass, measured times and the ILP.

Tawang is reached by one long mountain road from the plains of Assam. Before anything else, get your Inner Line Permit; see the Arunachal ILP guide.

The road from Guwahati

Wikipedia puts Tawang about 555 km from Guwahati and 320 km from Tezpur. The road enters Arunachal at Bhalukpong, where Wikivoyage says your permit is checked, and climbs through Bomdila and Dirang to Sela Pass at about 4,170 m, or through the new Sela tunnel below it. It then drops past the Jaswant Garh War Memorial and Nuranang Falls to Tawang.

By shared SUV and bus

Wikivoyage says the usual public transport is a shared SUV from Tezpur, leaving early in the morning, and that SUVs and a daily bus also run from Guwahati. We have no verified timetables or fares; ask at the stands a day ahead.

By air

The nearest airport is Tezpur, about 318 km and 539 minutes by road on our routing. Most people fly to Guwahati. Wikivoyage mentions a state government helicopter service between Guwahati and Tawang; it depends on weather, so treat it as a bonus, not a plan.
