Dirang and Bomdila on the road to Tawang — the two halt towns, their monasteries, and what to do with an extra night
Between the plains of Assam and Tawang the road crosses two small mountain towns, Bomdila and Dirang. Wikivoyage advises breaking the journey at one of them, and Dirang is its pick. You need your Inner Line Permit before you enter the state; see the Arunachal ILP guide.

Dirang
Dirang lies on the floor of a low valley on NH-13, in West Kameng district, with wooded slopes around it and a fast river beside the town. The town is also home to the national mountaineering and adventure sports institute, NIMAS. On our routing it is about 125 km and 230 minutes from Tawang.
- Dirang Dzong, a hilltop fortress village built in 1831, about 5 km east of the town centre. People still live there, so walk quietly and ask before you photograph anyone.
- The hot spring, about 2 km from the bazaar.
- Kalachakra Monastery, a Gelugpa monastery that Wikivoyage calls 500 years old, above the village.
- Mandala Top, a hilltop circle of 108 stupas, 27 km up the Mandala road, which birdwatchers like.
Bomdila
Bomdila, the district headquarters, stands at about 2,415 m, about 166 km and 299 minutes from Tawang on our routing; Wikipedia gives 167 km. Wikipedia mentions the monasteries in and around the town, the apple orchards and orchid farms on its slopes, the view of Kangto and Gorichen peaks from Bomdila Pass, and the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary nearby. The town has become a halt for travellers to Tawang. The road itself can be cut by landslides, Wikipedia warns, so keep a spare day.
