Best time to visit Pahalgam — meadows, snow and the pilgrimage months

When to visit Pahalgam: mild summers from June to October, cold winters with snow up to 4 m deep, and the busy Amarnath pilgrimage weeks in July and August.

The season at Pahalgam is set by the mountains and by the pilgrimage. Wikipedia describes a temperate climate with mild summers and cold winters, but gives no weather table, so we quote no monthly figures.

Late spring to autumn

Wikipedia says summer runs from June to October, when temperatures are at their highest, and that the town receives most of its rain between late winter and the start of summer. These are the months for the meadows of the Lidder valley and the day to Aru.

July and August

The Amarnath yatra starts from Pahalgam in these months and brings pilgrims in large numbers. The road to Chandanwari can be restricted, and the town is busier. Wikipedia gives the pilgrimage season as about 45 days.

Winter

Cold, with heavy snowfall that Wikipedia says can reach 4 m, and nights that fall below zero. Aru gets deep snow, and skiing and heli-skiing are practised there. The road to Pahalgam is slower after snow.

Plans for the season

The one-day plan works from late spring to early autumn, and the Aru day is best in the green months. Read how to reach Pahalgam and things to do in Pahalgam.

Questions people ask

What is the best time to visit Pahalgam?

Wikipedia says summer runs from June to October, when temperatures are at their highest but still mild, and that winters are cold, with heavy snow up to 4 m thick. July and August bring the Amarnath pilgrims, so the town is busier. We have no monthly weather table, so check the forecast.

Does it snow in Pahalgam?

Yes. Wikipedia says winter can bring heavy snowfall up to 4 m thick, and that night temperatures can fall below zero, though the day-night variation is small in December to February. The road can be slow or closed after snow. Aru and Chandanwari see the deepest snow, and some of it lingers into early summer.

Is Pahalgam crowded in summer?

In July and August, yes: the town is the base for the Amarnath yatra, which Wikipedia says brings a seasonal influx of pilgrims, and the town had about 7,020 tourist beds in 2015. For a quieter visit try late spring or autumn, and check restrictions on the road to Chandanwari during the pilgrimage.
