Best time to visit Kaziranga — the dry season, the grass burning and the monsoon floods

When to go to Kaziranga: November to April, the best sightseeing from late February to early April, the winter grass burning and the monsoon floods.

How this guide is built

The sources give seasons and a few figures, not a monthly table from the India Meteorological Department, so this guide describes the seasons and gives no figure for each month. The two main sources disagree on rainfall, and we show both.

The seasons

  • November to February: dry winter. Mild and dry, with highs averaging 25 °C and lows 5 °C at Kohora, by Wikipedia. The beels and channels dry up, and the tall grass is burned in December and January by park staff. Wikivoyage says this is a good time to see animals, and for migratory birds.
  • March to May: hot. Temperatures reach about 37 °C, and animals stay near water. The state page names late February to early April as the best sightseeing.
  • June to September: monsoon and floods. Most of the year's rain falls, and the Brahmaputra floods the park. Wikivoyage says it is closed from May to October. Animals move to the hills outside.
  • October. The floods ease, and the park reopens from November by the state page's best months.

What to plan around

The park is open for about half the year, so check the dates with the park office before you book. The Central Range at Kohora and the Western Range at Bagori are the most visited; read the park guide and things to do in Kaziranga.
