Gurdwara Paonta Sahib, on the Yamuna, marks where Guru Gobind Singh lived for four and a half years — a golden palanquin, and a museum of his weapons and pens.
What it is
On the bank of the Yamuna in Paonta Sahib, this is the town's central gurdwara — a memorial to Guru Gobind Singh, the Sikh faith's tenth guru. He founded the town itself in 1685. He then lived here for four and a half years — longer than he stayed anywhere else in his life. A golden palanquin, donated by devotees, sits inside the main hall.
Getting there
Right in the town itself, about 2 minutes by road from central Paonta Sahib — close enough that most visitors simply walk over from wherever they're staying.
The visit
Sri Talab Asthan and Sri Dastar Asthan, two key sites within the complex, are used respectively for disbursing funds and for turban-tying competitions. A museum nearby, Sahibzada Baba Ajit Singh Library and Museum, displays weapons and pens once used by the Guru himself — a genuine link to his own four and a half years in the town, rather than a later memorial built from scratch.
