Chaurasi Temple Complex and Mani Mahesh Temple, Bharmour
What it is
The Chaurasi temple complex stands at the centre of Bharmour, with 84 shrines set around its edge; chaurasi is the Hindi word for eighty-four. It was built about the 7th century, when Bharmour was the capital of the Chamba state under the name Brahmapura. The main temple, called the Mani Mahesh Temple, stands in its middle and holds a large Shiva linga.

Getting there
It is a minute from the centre of Bharmour and easily walked. From Chamba the road is 60 km and about 128 minutes.
The visit
Walk the courtyard first, then the main temples: the Lakshana Devi Temple, the oldest, and the stone tower of the Narasimha Temple. Shrines to Ganesh and to Dharmeshvar Mahadev stand at the entrance and the northern corner, and a life-size metal Nandi bull, with a broken ear and tail, stands in a shed in front of the main temple.
When to go
Any month the road is open. The Manimahesh pilgrimage in August or September brings crowds through the town. See when to visit Bharmour.
Around it
The Lakshana Devi Temple and Narasimha Temple are inside or beside it, and the road to the pilgrimage starts at Hadsar. The one-day plan walks the temples in order.

Questions people ask
What is the Chaurasi temple complex?
A group of temples at the centre of Bharmour with 84 shrines around its edge, which is what chaurasi means in Hindi. It was built about the 7th century, when Bharmour was the capital of the Chamba state under the name Brahmapura, and it still holds the main Manimahesh Temple.
Which temples are the main ones?
The Manimahesh Temple, with a large Shiva linga, stands in the centre. The Lakshana Devi Temple is the oldest, the Narasimha Temple has a tall stone tower, and there are also shrines to Ganesh and Dharmeshvar Mahadev, plus a life-size metal Nandi bull in a shed in front of the main temple.
How long should you spend there?
An hour for the courtyard and the main temples, longer if you want to look closely at the carving on the Lakshana Devi Temple. The complex is a minute from the centre of Bharmour, so it is on foot from anywhere in town. Dress modestly and ask before photographing.
