How far is Badrinath from Joshimath?
About 43 km and 76 minutes by road on our routing, up the Alaknanda valley past Govindghat and Pandukeshwar. In the monsoon, landslides after cloudbursts can close the road for a while, so leave early and keep a spare day if you travel in July or August.
Why stop a day in Joshimath on the way to Badrinath?
It breaks the long road up from Rishikesh, about 248 km on our routing, and it has its own history: the Narsingh Temple, Adi Shankara's northern math and the confluence at Vishnuprayag. It is also where the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib walks begin, at Govindghat.
What do I need for Badrinath?
Your yatra registration from the Uttarakhand portal and an identity card, which Wikipedia notes is required to enter the Badrinath Temple. The temple is open only from late April to early November, so check the year's dates on the temple committee's site before you go.
