Things to do in Darjeeling — sunrise, the toy train, monasteries and tea

Things to do in Darjeeling: Tiger Hill at sunrise, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Batasia Loop, monasteries, Chowrasta, the zoo and a tea estate.

Darjeeling is a ridge town where the main sights are on the ridge itself or a short drive from it.

The sunrise

Tiger Hill, at 2,590 m, is the sunrise viewpoint, about 25 minutes by road on our routing. Wikipedia says Kangchenjunga catches the first light and that Everest, Makalu and Lhotse are just visible on a clear day.

The toy train and the loop

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line, and the Batasia Loop is the spiral where it circles over its own track, with a memorial to Gorkha soldiers.

Monasteries and temples

The Yiga Choeling Monastery at Ghum has a tall Maitreya statue, the Peace Pagoda is a white Japanese stupa, and the Mahakal temple on Observatory Hill is shared by Hindus and Buddhists. St Andrew's Church is the oldest church in town.

In the town

Chowrasta is the old square and the start of the Mall. The zoo breeds red pandas and snow leopards, and Lloyd's Botanical Garden holds native Himalayan plants.

Tea

Tea is Darjeeling's other claim. Wikipedia says the Happy Valley estate, founded in 1854 about 3 km north of the town, is its second oldest, and that its factory opened to the public as a museum in 2008. We have no verified visiting rules, so ask before you go.

Questions people ask

What are the best things to do in Darjeeling?

Watch the sunrise from Tiger Hill, see the toy train and the Batasia Loop, visit the Yiga Choeling Monastery and the Peace Pagoda, and walk Chowrasta and the Mall below the Mahakal temple. The zoo, the mountaineering institute and Lloyd's Botanical Garden suit a half-day, and a tea estate fills an afternoon.

What is Darjeeling known for?

Tea, the toy train and the view of Kangchenjunga. Wikipedia says the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and that Darjeeling tea was given a geographical indication in 2005. Wikipedia says the town's economy rests on tea and tourism.

Is Darjeeling good for a family trip?

Yes, in the dry seasons. The toy train, the zoo with its red pandas and Lloyd's Botanical Garden are easy for children, and the ridge-road sights are short stops. The town's lanes are steep, and Wikipedia says motorised travel there is mostly by shared taxis, so plan for walking and agree fares first.
