Pangi valley and Sach Pass — Chamba's remote valley, and the summer road over the Pir Panjal

Pangi valley in Chamba district: the Chandrabhaga gorge between the Zanskar and Pir Panjal, the summer road over Sach Pass, the winter, and its festivals.

The remotest valley in Himachal

Pangi is a tehsil at the far north of Chamba district, and of Himachal: a long valley squeezed between the Zanskar Range to the north and the Pir Panjal to the south. The Chandrabhaga, which becomes the Chenab, cuts through it in a deep, narrow gorge for about 85 km before it enters the Paddar region of Jammu and Kashmir. The valley runs from about 2,000 m at Sansari Nallah to peaks above 6,000 m, some of them still unclimbed.

Wikipedia calls it, until recently, the remotest tribal area of the state: a road reached it only in the mid-1990s. Under the old Chamba state, an official posted to Pangi was paid a special allowance under the head of "funeral expenses", because nobody was sure he would come back.

Sach Pass, the summer road

The road most visitors take into Pangi from Chamba crosses Sach Pass on the Pir Panjal. Free-flow routing puts the pass about 118 km and 180 min from Chamba, and Killar, Pangi's headquarters, about 161 km and 324 min; on the mountain road over the pass, the real drive is far slower. Our own router could not measure this road. The pass is open only in summer, and the opening date depends on the snow, so ask in Chamba before you set off. Wikipedia notes that the valley is also reached by other routes in summer.

Summer and winter

Pangi lies beyond the reach of the monsoon, so its climate is cold and dry. Summers are cool, with days of 10 to 20 °C and up to 28 °C in June and July, cold nights, and little rain: this is the time the roads and passes are open. Snow begins on the heights after mid-October and reaches the lower valley by mid-December. In winter it falls below −20 °C in the upper reaches; streams freeze, snow and avalanches close every road, and the only way in is by air, with the state keeping a helicopter service for emergencies. The side valleys of Sural, Hudan and Saichu stay colder even in summer.

The side valleys

Pangi opens into several sub-valleys, among them Sural, Hudan, Saichu and Parmar, many of which lead up towards the Zanskar Range. They are the reason serious walkers come, but we publish no routes or times for them; go with a local guide.

Festivals of Pangi

The valley keeps its own calendar. Bishu, on the first day of Baisakh in mid-April, offers small wheaten cakes cooked in ghee to the local Devi. Utrain, on the first day of Magha, honours the ancestors, and every visitor who enters a house is fed. Jukaru, after Shivaratri, marks the arrival of spring: family gods are worshipped at dawn, the young greet their elders, and neighbours exchange food with the words shubh shagan. At the Khaul Mela, on Magha Purnima, a lighted torch is waved before the village deity, and small torches are thrown into the walnut trees; the one that catches in the branches brings the deity's blessing.
