Dalhousie in winter — snowfall, Khajjiar and Dainkund
A real winter, not a mild one
Dalhousie sits at 1,970 m across five hills facing the snow range, and its winter is colder than the height suggests. The town's record gives over 90 frost days and 20 to 30 snowy days a year. On the IMD normals January days average 11.5 °C and nights 2.3 °C; February is barely warmer at 12.7 °C and 2.7 °C. The record lows are −8.6 °C in January and −8.0 °C in both December and February.

What that means on the ground: frost most nights from December to February, snow several times in a winter, and a town that turns white after a storm and stays that way for a few days in the shaded forest while the sunny roads clear.
When the snow comes
The snow falls between December and March, and the coldest weeks, late December to mid-February, are the likeliest. There is no fixed date: a dry fortnight can pass with clear skies and frost, then one storm whitens everything. If snow is the reason for the trip, keep two or three days flexible and go when the forecast turns. December is the drier month on the record, 70.9 mm of rain and snow against 155.1 mm in January, so it brings more clear, frosty days.
Where the snow lies longest
Dainkund. The ridge at Dainkund, about 10 km and 20 min from town by road in clear weather, is higher than the town and holds snow on its open slopes and the ridge road. It is the first place to go the morning after a fall, once the road is open.
Khajjiar. Khajjiar, about 18 km and 38 min away, is the meadow ringed by deodar forest that everyone photographs. Under snow it is the winter picture of the area; on a dry winter day the meadow is brown and the snow sits on the ridge behind. After heavy snow the road may close until it is cleared, so ask in town before setting off.
Kalatop. The forest in Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, about 6 km away, keeps its snow under the trees. Wikivoyage mentions a toll barrier on the road and says the forest route from Lakkadmandi is closed to cars; ask at the barrier for the day's rules.
The town itself. The lanes round the old churches and the shaded slopes hold snow longest. Panchpula, 5 km out, is a short winter walk once the paths are clear.
Roads and getting in
The road up from Pathankot, about 86 km and 155 min in clear weather, is the usual way in; Pathankot has the nearest railway station and airport. From Chandigarh it is about 338 km, and from Delhi about 580 km, which free-flow routing puts at eight hours before traffic and the hill. In winter the plains have fog in the early hours, so leave after the sun is up or take an overnight bus. After snow, the roads in town are cleared first and the ridge roads later.
Planning the days
Keep the days short: the warm hours are ten to three, and the forest roads freeze once the sun leaves them. The two-day plan with Khajjiar works in winter with later starts, and the one-day Dainkund plan fits a single clear day. Bring thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves, a hat and shoes that grip, and check that the room has a heater. For the rest of the year see the best time to visit Dalhousie and things to do in Dalhousie.
