Ram Jhula, Rishikesh

The Ram Jhula, an iron suspension bridge of 1986 joining Sivananda Nagar to Swargashram, with the access changes reported since 2023 and what to check first.

What it is

The Ram Jhula is an iron suspension bridge over the Ganges, built in 1986 and about 3 km north-east of the centre of Rishikesh. It runs from Sivananda Nagar, in the Muni Ki Reti area on the west bank, to Swargashram on the east, where Parmarth Niketan and Gita Bhawan stand, and the Sivananda Ashram and the Divine Life Society are on the Sivananda Nagar side. Wikipedia gives the span as 750 feet (230 m) and says it is bigger than the Lakshman Jhula, which is 2 km upriver.

Getting there

The bridge point is about 14.9 km and 27 minutes from the centre by road on our routing. The two banks are far apart by road because the bridge carries foot traffic, so a car has to go around the river.

The visit

You come for the crossing and for what is at each end: ashrams, ghats, shops and the evening crowd on the east bank. The access has changed in recent years. Wikipedia reports that two-wheelers were barred and only pedestrians were allowed in 2023, and that by 2025 the bridge was closed completely according to a newspaper report. We cannot confirm today's position, so this page makes no promise that you can cross.

When to go

Evening is when the east-bank ghats fill for the sunset aarti, and the cooler months from October to March suit the walking. See when to visit Rishikesh.

Around it

Parmarth Niketan stands at the east end, and Lakshman Jhula is the next bridge upriver. The two-day plan walks the two bridges on one day.

Questions people ask

What is the Ram Jhula?

An iron suspension bridge over the Ganges, built in 1986, about 3 km north-east of the centre of Rishikesh. It joins Sivananda Nagar in Muni Ki Reti with the Swargashram area, where Parmarth Niketan and Gita Bhawan stand. Wikipedia gives its span as 750 feet, or 230 m, and says it is bigger than the Lakshman Jhula.

Is the Ram Jhula open?

Check locally. Wikipedia says two-wheelers were barred and only pedestrians were allowed in 2023, citing The Hindu, and that by 2025 the bridge was completely closed, citing a Dainik Jagran report. We have not verified the present status, so ask in Rishikesh before you plan to cross it.

How do you reach Swargashram if the bridge is shut?

By road, around the river. Our routing puts the Ram Jhula area about 14.9 km and 27 minutes from the centre of Rishikesh by car, because the river splits the town. Ask your hotel for the current way across, which may be another bridge, a boat or a drive around.
