Where to see Kanchenjunga — Pelling, Tiger Hill, Ravangla and Gangtok's ridge

Where to see Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain at 8,586 m: Pelling, Tiger Hill above Darjeeling, Ravangla and the ridge above Gangtok, and when.

Kanchenjunga, Kangchenjunga in the Indian government's spelling, rises to 8,586 m (28,169 feet) on the border of Sikkim and Nepal; only two mountains on earth are higher. In Sikkim it is sacred, the mountain that watches over the land, and every hill town of the region turns to face it on a clear morning. Here is where to stand.

Pelling

Pelling, in West Sikkim, faces the mountain most squarely: on a clear day it stands over the town, and our guide's cover picture was taken there. Pair the view with the Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse ruins, and read things to do in Pelling.

Tiger Hill, above Darjeeling

Tiger Hill is the classic sunrise point: the first light catches Kanchenjunga before the hills below, and on a clear morning Everest shows far to the west. Leave Darjeeling before dawn.

Ravangla

Ravangla, on its pass in South Sikkim, looks north to Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Siniolchu and Kabru by Wikipedia's account. See things to do in Ravangla.

The ridge above Gangtok

From the temple ridge in the upper reaches of Gangtok, the range shows to the west across the forested hills when the fog lifts.

When

Clear mornings are the rule. Cloud usually builds as the day goes on, and in the monsoon the mountain can stay hidden for days. Plan a spare morning in each place, and look again at dusk.

A mountain kept untouched

Until 1852 Kanchenjunga was thought to be the highest mountain of all, until the survey of 1849 showed Everest was higher. When Joe Brown and George Band first climbed it on 25 May 1955, they stopped just short of the summit, keeping a promise to the Chogyal of Sikkim that the top would remain untouched.
