Things to do in Pelling — monasteries, a lost capital, a skywalk and a sacred lake
Pelling is a hill station in West Sikkim, and its sights are close together, with the larger pilgrimage sites a longer drive out.
Near the town
The Pemayangtse Monastery is one of the oldest and best known in Sikkim, and the Rabdentse ruins beside it are what remain of the second royal capital. The Chenrezig statue and skywalk opened in 2018, and the Sanga Choeling Monastery stands on the ridge above. All of them are within about ten minutes of the town by road on our routing, apart from the climb to Sanga Choeling.
Further out
Khecheopalri Lake, sacred to Buddhists and Hindus, is about 55 minutes away. Tashiding, which Wikipedia calls the holiest monastery in Sikkim, is about 69 minutes out, and at Yuksom, the first capital, are the Norbugang Chorten and Dubdi Monastery, about 70 to 77 minutes out.
Waterfalls, a bridge and the villages
Wikipedia names several other places and gives rough distances from Pelling: the Changey Waterfalls, 10 km; Darap, a village 7 km on the road to Yuksom; the Rimbi Waterfall, 5 km on from Darap; and the Kanchenjunga Falls, 28 km. It also mentions the Singshore Bridge, a suspension bridge 240 m long and over 100 m high, but its two articles put the bridge 5 km and 26 km from Pelling, and we found no verified location, so we give no stop for it.
Trekking
Wikipedia calls Pelling the base for the treks of West Sikkim. The best-known, from Yuksom to Dzongri and Goecha La, is 46 km by its account, and it enters the Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016. We have no verified permit rules or route details.

Questions people ask
What are the best things to do in Pelling?
Visit the Pemayangtse Monastery and the Rabdentse ruins, then the Chenrezig statue and its glass skywalk, and look for Kanchenjunga on a clear morning. The Sanga Choeling Monastery stands on the ridge above. With a full day, go out to Khecheopalri Lake, or to Tashiding and Yuksom.
Is Pelling a good base for the sights of West Sikkim?
Yes. The nearest sights are within about ten minutes by road, and Khecheopalri Lake, Tashiding and Yuksom are day trips of an hour or more each way on our routing. Wikipedia also calls Pelling the base for the treks of West Sikkim, and says jeeps connect it to nearby towns.
Can you see Kanchenjunga from Pelling?
Wikipedia says the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga can be seen at close quarters from Pelling, but a view needs clear sky. Early morning is the usual choice, and cloud can hide the range for days. We have no verified sunrise spot, so ask your hotel which ridge to use on the day.
