How to reach Sonamarg — the Srinagar highway and its winter closure
Sonamarg stands at about 2,730 m on the highway from Srinagar to Ladakh, and the road decides when you can go.
By road from Srinagar
It is about 80 km and 100 minutes on our routing, by National Highway 1 through Kangan and Gagangir. From the airport it is about 98 km and 112 minutes. Srinagar is the usual starting point; from Gulmarg it is about 118 km and 137 minutes, and from Pahalgam about 163 km and 180 minutes.
Winter
Wikipedia says heavy snowfall and avalanches block the highway in winter, and that local traffic is allowed only as far as Gagangir, the last permanent village. A tunnel at Sonamarg, the Z-Morh Tunnel, is meant to keep the road open all year; ask locally whether it is.
Beyond Sonamarg
The highway continues over Zoji La to Ladakh. Wikipedia says a 14 km tunnel under the pass will cut the crossing from over three hours to about 15 minutes.
