Best time to visit Gangotri — when the temple is open
The season at Gangotri is set by the temple. The Gangotri Temple reopens on Akshaya Tritiya in spring and closes at Diwali in autumn, and the dates are announced each year. Wikipedia gives no climate data for Gangotri, so we give no monthly figures.
Spring and early summer
The opening months. The road is open, the days are long, and the town is at its busiest. Leave your lodging and travel early, and carry warm clothes; the town is at about 3,200 m, and it is cold even in summer.
The wet months
Rain brings slips and landslides on the one road up the valley, and the trail beyond the town to Gomukh is exposed to rockfall. Travel then only with spare days and check the road and the weather every morning.
Autumn, until Diwali
The weeks after the rains are quieter, with shorter, colder days, until the temple closes at Diwali. Start early and keep time for the return drive.
Winter
The temple is shut from Diwali until Akshaya Tritiya. In these months the goddess's idol is kept at Mukhba village, near Harsil, and the road above is not used by visitors.

What is the best month to visit Gangotri?
Late spring and early summer, soon after the temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya, and the weeks after the rains, before Diwali. The road and the temple are used only while the temple is open. The wet months bring slips and closures, so travel then only with spare days and check the road each morning.
Is Gangotri open in winter?
No. The temple is closed from Diwali until Akshaya Tritiya, by Wikipedia's account, and the goddess's idol is kept at Mukhba village near Harsil in those months. The exact dates change every year, so check the temple committee's announcement before you plan the trip.
When can you go to Gomukh?
Only in the open season, and only with the forest authorities' permission. We have no verified trek dates, daily limits or permit rules, and the route is exposed to rockfall and landslides. Ask the authorities and an experienced guide, and allow spare days for weather.
