What is the Maharani Temple in Gulmarg?
A temple, also known as the Shiv Temple, dedicated to Shiva and his consort Parvati. Wikipedia says Maharaja Hari Singh built it in 1915 for his wife, Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodia. It stands on a rise above the Gulmarg meadow, with a red conical roof, and gives a wide view over the resort.
How far is it from the middle of Gulmarg?
About 2 km by the map, a short drive or a walk from the resort centre. Approach paths are mapped from the road. We have no verified opening hours; ask locally, and expect a place of worship where you dress modestly and remove your shoes before going in.
Is it worth a visit without the gondola?
Yes, on a clear day: it is a short outing with open views over the meadow and the surrounding forest, and the red roof photographs well against the snow or the summer green. It combines easily with St Mary's Church and a walk on the meadow, for about an hour in all.
