Things to do in Munsiyari — the peaks, the temple, the lake and the Johar valley

Things to do in Munsiyari: the Panchachuli peaks, the Nanda Devi Temple, Thamri Tal, Khaliya Top, birds and the lichen park, and treks into the Johar valley.

Munsiyari is a base for the mountains and the trade valley behind them.

The peaks

The five Panchachuli peaks, from 6,334 m to 6,904 m by Wikipedia's account, stand across the valley. The Nanda Devi Temple gives the open view, best at first light.

The forest and the meadows

Thamri Tal is a forest lake that Wikivoyage lists as musk-deer habitat. Wikivoyage also names the Khaliya Top meadow and the Maheshwari Kund pond about 1.5 km from town. Wikipedia records 319 bird species in the Gori basin and India's first lichen park, of 1.5 acres, opened in town.

The Johar valley

The valley north of Munsiyari was the old trade route to Tibet, and Munsiyari was the winter home of its Bhotia traders. Treks lead to Milam and Ralam glaciers. Wikipedia says mid-March to May is the suitable time for Milam, and that a motor road from Munsiyari was being built; we cannot verify its state, and the area is near the border, so ask locally about access and permits.

In the market

Wikivoyage says to look for hand-woven carpets and woollen wear made by Bhotia women.
