Dzükou Valley from Kohima — what is published about the walk, and what is not
The Dzükou Valley is the high meadow country behind Mount Japfü, south of Kohima, and one of the best-loved walks in the north-east. This page says what is published and what is not; walkers' times we could not source are left out.

The valley
Wikipedia puts the valley floor at about 2,438 to 2,452 m, behind Mount Japfü, which rises to about 3,048 m. It is a rolling country of meadow and dwarf bamboo, drained by the Dzükou stream and ringed by forest and rhododendron. The name is usually read as cold water, after that stream. It is a home of Blyth's tragopan, Nagaland's state bird, and the Botanical Survey of India has recorded 335 plant species there.
Getting to the start
From the Nagaland side, walkers set out from the Southern Angami villages of Viswema and Jakhama, within about 25 km of Kohima by Wikipedia's account. On our routing Jakhama is about 17.1 km and 34 minutes from the city, and Viswema about 22.1 km and 45 minutes. Wikivoyage says the valley is reached only on foot, partly by a steep climb through forest.
What we do not give
No walking time or distance from the villages to the valley: we found none from a source we can rely on, so we give none, and we have not built a timed plan for it. The valley also lies across a disputed boundary between Nagaland and Manipur, and we draw no line and make no claim about it.
Season and care
Wildflowers carpet the valley from May to September, and the Dzükou lily, the same species as the Shirui lily, blooms in May and June. Those are wet months at Kohima. Wikipedia records wildfires in 2006, 2020–21 and January 2026. Wikivoyage's advice is sound: take a local guide, leave word of your route, and pack food, water, rain gear and warm layers.
Plan around it
