Installing it

1. Tap Download the app, then open the downloaded file.
2. Android will warn that it is not from the Play Store and ask you to allow installs from this app — that is expected. Allow it, then tap Install.
3. Allow location when asked. Without it the app can show you the map but cannot show you where you are on it.
4. Allow notifications too. This is how an off-trail warning reaches you with the phone in your pocket and the screen off.
5. Before you lose signal, open a trek or place and tap Save offline. That downloads the map for that area onto the phone.

What works without signal

• The map itself, for every area you saved before leaving.
• Following a trek: your position on the trail, distance covered, and the way back to the line if you stray.
• Checkpoints and overnight stops along a saved trek.
• Battery saver, which checks your position far less often when you are comfortably on the trail and wakes up when you are not.

Booking, ordering and payments need a connection, as you would expect.
